Lui Che-woo, the self-made billionaire and founder of K. Wah Group and Galaxy Entertainment, has passed away at the age of 95. Known for his transformative influence on Hong Kong’s property and gaming sectors, Lui built a vast empire that includes hotels, resorts, and casinos in both Hong Kong and Macau. He passed away peacefully on November 7, according to statements from K. Wah International and Galaxy Entertainment.

Starting with a small construction materials business in 1955, Lui expanded his ventures to become one of Hong Kong’s wealthiest figures, with a net worth estimated at $12.1 billion. His gaming company, Galaxy Entertainment, was among the first to secure a gaming license when Macau liberalized its industry in 2002, a move that solidified his legacy in the casino business. Lui was also deeply committed to philanthropy, founding the Lui Che Woo Prize for World Civilisation in 2015 to support global welfare and sustainability initiatives.

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu paid tribute to Lui’s contributions to society and his devotion to education and youth development. The Lui Che Woo legacy, celebrated just recently at his 95th birthday, will continue under the stewardship of his children and the K. Wah Group board.
