The Malaysian Education Ministry is currently evaluating a proposal for a unified university entry exam for Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and matriculation graduates, according to Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh. While no final decision has been made, Wong assured that the ministry is dedicated to creating equitable opportunities for both matriculation and STPM students.
During a session in the Dewan Rakyat, Wong responded to a query from Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, who inquired about the government’s plans to merge the matriculation and STPM exams. Wong also mentioned that the Education Ministry is collaborating with the Higher Education Ministry to explore the establishment of a Premium Form 6 college, aimed at elevating Form 6 education as a premier pathway for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers.
Form 6 education, already rebranded under the Malaysia Education Development Plan 2013-2025, has the most extensive reach in post-SPM pathways, with 635 institutions offering STPM nationwide. Wong highlighted that the STPM qualification is recognized globally, on par with Cambridge A-Levels, and provides access to renowned universities worldwide. Additionally, STPM graduates with outstanding results are eligible to apply for scholarships from JPA, Mara, and other sponsors.
