The Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced plans to introduce a bilingual preschool curriculum by 2026, aiming to enhance language proficiency and prepare young learners for a globalized world. The initiative, which will see English and Malay being used as mediums of instruction, is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen bilingual education nationwide.
Deputy Education Minister Lim Yi Wei stated that the bilingual curriculum will focus on fostering early language skills while maintaining a balance between the two languages. "Our goal is to create a strong foundation for children, allowing them to excel in both Malay and English," Lim said during the announcement. The program will also emphasize interactive and play-based learning approaches to ensure children are engaged and motivated.
The decision follows extensive feedback from educators, parents, and policymakers who have highlighted the importance of bilingual proficiency in improving students’ academic and career prospects. Early pilot programs will be conducted in selected preschools starting next year, with training sessions planned for teachers to equip them with the skills needed to deliver the bilingual curriculum effectively.
Education experts and stakeholders have largely welcomed the initiative, noting that it aligns with global educational trends and prepares students for multilingual communication. However, some raised concerns about the readiness of teachers and resources, urging the government to ensure adequate support is provided during the rollout.
