President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly leaning toward Florida Senator Marco Rubio as his choice for Secretary of State as he assembles his national security team for a second term, according to sources familiar with Trump’s decision-making process. Although no formal offer had been made as of Monday night, insiders say Rubio has emerged as Trump’s preferred candidate after multiple calls and discussions with key allies.
Earlier in the day, sources indicated that Trump had been considering Ric Grenell, a former ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence under Trump’s first administration. However, as the day progressed, the president-elect’s preference shifted toward Rubio, largely due to input from supporters of the Florida senator.
Several sources close to the process told CNN that Rubio expressed interest in joining Trump’s Cabinet, provided he was offered the right role. As Secretary of State, Rubio would oversee U.S. diplomatic efforts and help shape Trump’s foreign policy agenda in his second term.
In recent years, Rubio has bolstered his foreign policy credentials, building bipartisan relationships and establishing himself as a key figure in the Republican Party. As one of the Senate’s top voices on national security, he has been vocal about concerns over China’s global influence, particularly in areas like technology and cybersecurity.
The New York Times first reported on Trump’s anticipated pick, but a spokesperson for Rubio declined to comment on the matter.
Should Rubio be appointed, his expertise in foreign policy and national security could help steer the State Department toward addressing complex international challenges, with a particular focus on U.S.-China relations. For now, the political world watches as Trump’s national security team takes shape.
